The Soul City Institute promotes health and development through TV and radio, and on the ground in locations such as schools and the workplace.

It is regarded internationally as one of the foremost 'communications for social change' projects in the world, combining mass media initiatives with community-based projects.

Soul City deals with a range of issues:

  • violence against women & children
  • mother & child health
  • TB
  • tobacco control
  • responsible personal finance skills
  • small business development
  • 60% of content HIV/AIDS

The institute was established in 1992 as a non-governmental organisation and has grown to employ over 70 full-time staff.

The Soul City Institute's largest donors are:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID)
  • The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

Past funders have included UNICEF, the European Union, Irish Aid, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Open Society Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Locally, the Soul City Institute is supported by the South African Department of Health, the Department of Social Development, and the Presidency.  The Institute receives corporate sponsorship from BP and MTN.

The Soul City Institute is a company incorporated under Section 21 of the Companies Act, and is tax-exempt as a Public Benefit Organisation under Section 30 of the Income Tax Act.
